Short-Term Assignment Retirees for Service are a core group of RSVP volunteers who enjoy the variety of intensive short-term volunteer assignments.
These are assignments that give you the flexibility to match your schedule with your communities needs. Short term volunteering offers something new every time. It is a great way to meet new people and have fun.
Short term assignments require a very minimum of training.
Examples are:
- Informational booths at community events
- Health Fairs and Community festivals
- Small assembly projects for local organizations
What’s the Catch?
None! Simply call our office to become one of our STARS! Your name will be added to a list of other STARS. If you are not able to volunteer when called, no problem! We just call the next person on the list. A sizeable corps of volunteers who want occasional variety will share the load.

Locally, RSVP sponsors the Senior Health Insurance Program which provides free counseling about Medicare, Supplemental and Long Term Care Insurance, and HMO’s. Volunteer counselors are trained by the Illinois Department of Insurance on the latest Medicare changes and options.
Absolutely no selling of insurance. Just information to make wise decisions and assistance to address billing questions and problems.
Active retirees and seniors may already be volunteering elsewhere. Good for you! RSVP need not be an “extra” commitment. Your volunteer hours at any of the 104 not-for-profit organizations and agencies we serve can count as RSVP hours. STARS Short Term Assignments for Retirees in Service offers flexibility and variety.
RSVP is a program of the Corporation for National Service–the federal domestic volunteer program. Other components of CNS include the Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, AmeriCorps, VISTA, and Learn and Serve. Currently there are more than 750 RSVP programs in the nation; Illinois alone has 23 different programs! RSVP is federally funded by the Corporation for National Service and state funded by the Illinois Department on Aging.
Locally, RSVP of Peoria and Tazewell Counties is sponsored by the Peoria Friendship House of Christian Service, an ecumenical inner city ministry with afterschool programs, emergency assistance, food pantry, senior club, Dress for Success, Wheels for Work and GED program.
RSVP is the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, providing opportunities for people aged 55 and over to share the knowledge and skills they have acquired over their lifetime. RSVP volunteers build their communities stronger as they serve in a variety of ways.
Currently, 1020 volunteers assist over 104 different not-for-profit organizations and agencies in Peoria and Tazewell Counties. These seniors have served 135,000 hours in the last year “Making a Difference”, building stronger communities and addressing priority needs.
